Bio for Atlanta Artist, Maxine Hess

Bio ImageMaxine Hess is a full time professional artist specializing in mixed media – paint, pastel and thread on paper, canvas and other material. She is a member of the Atlanta Artist Center and the Women’s Caucus for Art of Georgia. Her work is in several private collections including the exiled heir to the throne of Afghanistan.

She is a classically trained artist who completed her initial studies at Boston University’s School of Fine and Applied Arts where she was influenced by Arthur Hoener, an abstract painter who studied with Hans Hoffman and Josef Albers, and by Murray Reich, who is now in New York. She completed her BFA at the Atlanta College of Art where she studied with Norman Wagner, formerly Chairman of the Printmaking Department and currently on the Board of Advisors of the Atlanta Printmakers Studio. More recently, Maxine studied figure painting with Joan Tysinger at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and encaustic art with Helen DeRamus, a nationally known encaustic artist.

After many years of making art while working as a consultant and executive coach, Maxine is now working full time in her studio. She has enjoyed living on the East Coast and in the Northwest, and currently she lives in Atlanta, GA with her husband and tabby cat. Her travels have taken her to many of the Caribbean islands, where she was introduced to the beauty of marine life, and to Israel, France, Italy and England. These varied living and working experiences add depth and originality to her work.
