Artist Statement by Atlanta Artist, Maxine Hess

Artist Statement imageI am intrigued by the idea of transformation. My inspiration comes from women, from nature and from the sea, especially from the intricate, complex linear qualities of trees and sea fans and the patterns they form. I have always been fascinated by trees, their slender, intertwining branches and their seasonal changes contrasting with their strength and grounding in the earth. Sea fans are like trees. They appear soft and fragile, but they are coral, solid and strong like trees.

I delight in exploring the multiple transformative qualities I observe in myself and other women, our ability to move from one state to another, from one environment to another, and our ever changing and adapting to the complexities of life. We are fluid in motion like sea fans in the ocean and trees in the wind, but grounded.

My intention is to express our separate and collective journeys, as well as incorporate my beliefs and my sisters’ attitudes of reflectivity and hopefulness. I do this using a variety of media, including paint and embroidery thread, while incorporating symbols, such as the sea fan, along with repeating patterns.

My initial art studies were grounded in representational art, but outside of the academic setting I was exposed to abstract expressionism. As a result my work reflects both representational and non-objective imagery.

I continue to create art that comes from my spirit, with the hope of evoking an emotional reaction in the viewer.
